Providence Health Care has completed its first round of community forums about plans for the new St. Paul’s Hospital and the health needs of the community.

Our forums attracted a wide range of community participants and enabled us to hear their important views and ideas. The two West End community forums held on February 16 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church drew nearly 80 West End community advocates, health care workers, business owners and residents, including many seniors.

Our two Downtown Eastside/False Creek forums on February 24 drew over 50 Downtown Eastside service providers, housing and neighbourhood advocates and community members, as well as some West End residents. Many Providence and VCH staff, including senior leaders, attended to facilitate the events and to listen to the community’s feedback. City Planners also came to take in the community’s feedback on this important project.

The forums are part of a public consultation process led by Providence, in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health, to understand the health care needs of the community, and address their concerns and needs as best as possible as the planning progresses.

Eight community forums – four per neighbourhood – are taking place in two waves in February and March. In the first wave of community forums, PHC and VCH asked residents to express what they are concerned about, interested in, excited about or worried about as the planning for the new St. Paul’s moves forward. The goal was to hear from residents and community groups what particular areas of interest they have and then to use those expressed interests and topics to progress to further discussion in the second wave of forums, scheduled in March.

Summary of your feedback

Thanks to everyone who participated in our first round of community forums. We have captured the feedback and questions we heard from you in the following forum notes.

Some themes from the West End forums included:

  • a strong interest in the continued provision of health care services across the spectrum to meet the continued health needs of the West End community;
  • interest in what kinds of health care services would be developed at the new site;
  • concerns around how the hospital redevelopment would change the fabric of the neighbourhood in both the local West End and Strathcona communities; and,
  • safety of, and access to, the new site at Station Street.

Some themes from the Downtown Eastside/False Creek forums included:

  • interest in provision of health care services across the spectrum at – and nearby – the new site, including culturally sensitive, patient-centred, compassionate health care, to meet diverse needs of area residents;
  • some interest in the continued provision of health care services across the spectrum to meet the continued health needs of the West End community;
  • concerns around how the hospital redevelopment would change the fabric of the surrounding neighbourhoods (Strathcona, DTES, False Creek) and strong interest in how it can be well integrated into these communities; and,
  • safety of, and access to, the new site at Station Street.

More about the new St. Paul’s Community Forums

Lead by Providence, in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), these eight community forums in the West End and Downtown Eastside/False Creek are part of a public consultation process underway between February and March. The purpose of the process is to provide members of stakeholder groups and of the communities near the current and future St. Paul’s sites with opportunities to provide important feedback on the project. This input will help inform decision-making around health services planning for the new St. Paul’s Hospital and health campus.

Last chance to take part in round two community forums

Two second round West End community forums were held in the morning and evening of March 1 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, attracting many participants and yielding a vibrant dialogue. A report from these forums will be prepared and shared on the project website and via newsletter. Stay tuned.

Our final two community forums take place March 9 (False Creek Flats neighbourhood) and March 10 (Downtown Eastside neighbourhood).
