Community update

One year into construction and the project is already exceeding targets – and helping the local community.

The new St. Paul’s Hospital and Health Campus is the first construction project to trigger the City of Vancouver’s Community Benefit Agreement Policy. At the one-year mark, the project has:

  • Hired 47% of new employees from an equity-seeking group, 18% of whom live locally.
  • Procured 25% of goods and services from businesses with social impact.
  • Sourced 39% of goods and services from local businesses.

Construction update

The construction site at Station Street is buzzing!

  • Concrete is being poured everyday – for slabs, walls, and columns.
  • Excavation is nearly complete.
  • All four cranes have been erected.
  • Civil work is ongoing as piping for utilities is being installed.

Earlier this year, BC’s largest concrete pour ever (for a vertical project) happened at Station Street. With the help of 516 concrete trucks, 4,600m3 worth of concrete (or a volume of about half a million soccer balls) was continuously poured for 12+ hours into the foundation of the new St. Paul’s Hospital.

  • This large seismic footing will help the building resist damage from future earthquakes.

PCL Construction is pouring floors and pillars for each level of the hospital, starting with the 4-level underground parkade. By the end of the year, you might even see the main floor of the new hospital peek out from the ground.

Hospital design update

The new hospital is designed with patients at the centre, and that has meant consultations with a broad range of stakeholders – especially with the patients themselves. Read how patient voices are helping shape the design of the new St. Paul’s Hospital.

One of the biggest transformations in care is in store for our smallest patients. Discover how the new family-centred Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will be completely different.

The Project Team continues to fine-tune the detailed design of the hospital, focusing on the details like the location of light switches and equipment.

In the fall, PCL will construct fully-built mock rooms with real walls, ceilings, equipment, and furniture that will help us test routines to make sure we’ve got the final details right. It’ll give us a good idea of what our future will look like. 

By the end of the year, designs will be near the finish line!
