‘Topped out’
It’s another major construction milestone! We’ve finished pouring concrete for the 11-storey structure and the new St. Paul’s Hospital now stands at full height

It takes a huge team to bring this hospital to life. Currently, 1,400 tradespeople work on site each day, equivalent to the population of a small village like Lions Bay.

Now, teams are focusing their attention on the exterior and interior of the hospital. By the time construction completes in 2026, PCL estimates that more than 10,000 tradespeople will have worked on the hospital at one time or another. The hospital is expected to open to patients in 2027.

‘Intuitive’ and ‘impressive’
As a nurse at St. Paul’s Hospital for the past 10 years, Nadia Vrtacic has eagerly waited to see the new St. Paul’s Hospital come to life – and now it’s becoming a reality. Almost 100 staff and clinicians came to tour life-sized mock-ups of the new hospital, featuring real walls, floors and even some of the equipment and technology they will use in the new hospital.

For many staff, these in-person visits are their first chance to see what’s in store when the new hospital opens in 2027. Read more.

Collaboration shapes design
The new St. Paul’s Hospital Project Team and frontline hospital staff have partnered with a team of design researchers from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU) to help design the future Scopes and Procedures space at the new hospital. This newly combined unit will be home to all-day procedures which require sedation or local anesthesia, such as colonoscopy, gastrointestinal, endoscopy and others.

Research centre design underway
Plans for the new state-of-the-art research centre that will be built next to the new St. Paul’s Hospital continue to progress.

Earlier this year, the project celebrated a key milestone with the submission of the Development Permit application to the City of Vancouver. The project team continues to focus on advancing designs by engaging with medical staff, researchers and corporate staff, and subject matter experts.

PCL Construction, the builder for the new St. Paul’s Hospital, will also manage construction for the research centre. Construction is expected to begin in early 2025.
