On The Ground At New St. Paul’s Hospital
Posted On: Saturday October 15, 2022Construction update
Construction is humming along at the site of the new St. Paul’s Hospital. The project officially broke ground last year, and since then, construction has been moving right on schedule. Concrete has been poured for parking levels P3 and P4, and work is now underway on Level P2.
Get an on-the-ground look at the hospital’s construction progress with Kevin Little, senior manager of design and project delivery:
By the end of December, we should have a large area of concrete poured for the hospital’s main floor (Level 1). And in 2023, you’ll really start to see the hospital take shape above ground! It’ll be a few more years of construction before the new hospital is expected to complete in 2026 and open to patients in 2027.
DYK? 1,232 tons of CO2 were saved during the largest concrete pour ever (for a vertical project in BC) at the new St. Paul’s Hospital construction site. By using a low-carbon concrete, 39% of emissions were saved compared to the standard concrete mix. That’s equivalent to taking 265 gas-powered cars off the street!
Where will the new hospital be located?
About 3 km away from the current hospital on Burrard Street, the new hospital will be located in Vancouver’s False Creek Flats, bordered by Station Street, Prior Street, Trillium Park and National Avenue. The site is highly accessible with proximity to major arterial roads and key public transit such as Main Street-Science World SkyTrain station, several bus routes, and the Pacific Central Station.
Hospital design update
Improving patient experience has been a key driving force behind the redesign of the new St. Paul’s Hospital. Read how patient feedback has been vital in shaping the hospital’s rehabilitation space, including an open reception area and designated “patient zone.”
By the end of the year, the design of clinical spaces will be nearly complete, and the hospital designs will be finalized in 2023.
